There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a home when a pet has died. The lead is still hanging by the door. The food bowl is exactly where it always was. Even the air seems to be listening for the jingle of a collar, or the soft thud of a cat landing on the bed.

If you are reading this, that quiet may be very fresh. Or perhaps you are reading ahead because you know it is coming. Either way, we are so sorry. Losing a dog or a cat means losing a daily companion, and it is completely normal to feel numb, lost, or unable to think straight.

At Phoenix Pet Cremations, we care for dogs, cats, small pets and horses from our crematorium at Culverts Farm in Boreham, near Chelmsford. This guide is what we would tell a friend: what to do in the first few hours, how cremation actually works, what to ask before you choose anyone, and how to bring your companion home in a way that feels right for you. Nothing here has to be decided all at once.

If you only read one thing

You do not have to make every decision today. Keep your pet comfortable and cool, call your vet or call us, and take it one step at a time. Our lines are open 8.30am to 8.30pm, seven days a week, on 01245 922 023.

The first few hours: five gentle steps

Take a moment. Sit with your pet if you would like to. Let children and family members say goodbye in their own way. Some owners also let a surviving cat or dog spend a few quiet minutes with their friend. There is no right or wrong here, only what feels natural to you.

Keep them comfortable and cool. Lay your pet on a soft towel or blanket, with a waterproof layer underneath, as the body can release fluids after death. Choose a cool room away from radiators, direct sunlight and underfloor heating, and use breathable fabric such as a cotton sheet rather than sealing your pet in a plastic bag.

Call your vet. If your pet has died at home, your vet can advise you and, if you wish, arrange cremation. Not every practice offers a choice of crematorium, but you are always free to ask for a specific one, including us. You can read more about how we work with practices on our Vets Partnership page.

Save a keepsake while you can. A small clipping of fur or a paw print is far easier to take now than to wish for later. We offer clay and ink paw print keepsakes, and they can be prepared alongside a same-day cremation.

Call us when you are ready. We collect from your home or your vet seven days a week in an unmarked vehicle, or you can bring your pet to us. Outside our usual hours, our out-of-hours service can safely take your pet into our care (out-of-hours charges apply, and you will need to contact us by 8.30pm).

Cremation options explained, without the jargon

The words used around pet cremation can be confusing at the worst possible moment. In the UK you will usually come across three types:

Type

What it means

Worth asking

Individual

Your pet is cremated on their own, and only their ashes are returned to you.

How does the provider guarantee this? Is there a certificate?

Partitioned

Several pets are cremated in the same chamber at the same time, kept apart by dividers.

Practice varies, so ask exactly how ashes are separated and returned.

Communal

Pets are cremated together, and ashes are not usually returned to owners.

Often chosen by owners who do not want ashes returned.

At Phoenix, we only carry out genuine individual cremations. We are an accredited member of the Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria (APPCC), which means independent inspectors have checked that we work to a strict code of practice before, during and after every cremation. Every pet is cremated on their own, and a certificate is returned with their ashes.

Five questions to ask any pet crematorium

Whoever you choose, these questions will tell you a great deal:

Will my pet be cremated on their own? If the answer is anything other than a clear yes, ask what will happen instead.

Are you an APPCC member? Membership involves inspection against a code of practice. You can read what that means on our APPCC accreditation page.

Will I receive a certificate with the ashes? It is a small thing, but it is proof that the ashes are your pet's.

How will my pet be collected and cared for? Ask about the vehicle, the people, and where your pet will be until the cremation.

What is the full cost, and what might be extra? Ask about out-of-hours charges, returning ashes to your home, and caskets or urns. We would always rather give you a clear quote than a surprise. You can get in touch or book online, and payment plans are available.

Three ways to say goodbye at Phoenix

1. Collection from your home or vet

We come to you, seven days a week, in a discreet unmarked vehicle. Your pet is handled carefully at all times and treated as though they were one of our own. Afterwards you can collect the ashes yourself, or we can return them to your home or your vet (an additional charge applies).

2. Bringing your pet to us

Some people find comfort in doing this last thing themselves. If you bring your dog or cat to our crematorium, a same-day cremation is available Monday to Friday at no extra cost, during our working hours of 8.30am to 5.30pm. Ashes and keepsakes can then go home with you later that same day.

3. An attended cremation

For added peace of mind, you can be present as your pet is gently placed into the chamber. You may say goodbye in our Farewell Room first, and choose whether to watch or simply be nearby. An attended cremation is an optional extra to the cremation cost, has limited availability, and needs to be arranged with our office in advance. Ashes are normally ready in around two to three hours, and we can give you a local area information pack, perhaps a walk by the river or a cup of tea in a nearby village, while you wait.

If you are reading this before goodbye

If your dog or cat is elderly or unwell, making a plan is not a betrayal. It is a kindness to both of you. Having a plan means that when the day comes, your energy goes into being with your pet, not into phone calls and decisions.

Pet euthanasia is available seven days a week through our partnered vets, either in the comfort of your own home or here at the crematorium, at affordable rates. Our Home Euthanasia page explains how it works, and you are always welcome to call us for a quiet, no-pressure conversation.

Bringing them home: keepsakes with meaning

There is no correct thing to do with your pet's ashes. The right choice is simply the one that makes your home feel a little less empty. These are the options our families choose most often:

Ideas for your pet's ashes

Keep them close. In an urn, a casket or a photo frame on a shelf where they always liked to sit.

Bury them in the garden. Under a favourite tree or rose bush, perhaps with a marker. If you rent, check with your landlord first.

Scatter them somewhere special. A favourite walk, a quiet beach. Ask the landowner for permission first, and pick a still day.

Plant a memorial. A tree, a bed of bulbs, or a small wildflower patch that returns every spring.

Share them. Divide the ashes between family members, or keep a small amount in a piece of jewellery.

Wait. Ashes keep. Many people need weeks, or even months, before they know what feels right.

Looking after yourself

Grief for a pet is real grief. You may feel guilty about decisions you had to make, or find that people around you do not quite understand how deep it goes. Give yourself permission to feel all of it. Writing down a favourite memory, planting something, or talking to someone who has been through it can all help.

If you would like to talk to someone, the Blue Cross Pet Loss Support service offers free, confidential support by phone on 0800 096 6606, as well as webchat and email, from 8.30am to 8.30pm every day. If you are helping a child through the loss, honest and simple words are usually kinder than euphemisms.

Frequently asked questions

How soon should I arrange cremation after my pet dies?

There is no single deadline, but sooner is usually kinder, as a body begins to change quickly, particularly in warm weather. Keeping your pet cool buys you time. If you are unsure, call your vet or call us on the same day and we will talk you through it.

Will I definitely get my own pet's ashes back?

Yes. Every pet is cremated individually and on their own, and a certificate is returned with the ashes. Read more on our FAQ page.

Can I collect the ashes on the same day?

Yes. If you bring your pet to us, same-day cremation is available Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5.30pm at no extra cost. For an attended cremation, ashes are normally ready in about two to three hours.

Can you collect out of hours?

Yes. Our out-of-hours service is available seven days a week to safely take your pet into our care, with out-of-hours charges. Please contact us by 8.30pm. If you would rather not talk, you can call or text 07487 812 142.

How much does it cost?

The cost depends on your pet's size and the choices you make. Rather than quote a vague range, we would prefer to give you a clear price for your situation, so please get in touch or book online. Payment plans are available.

Because "goodbye" doesn't have to mean gone.

Grief has a strange habit of showing up in the smallest places — an empty bed, a lead on a hook, a bowl still by the back door. You can't undo that ache. But you can choose how you carry it forward. Here are ten gentle ways Essex pet owners keep their best friends close, long after the last cuddle.

1. A Paw Print, Frozen In Time

There's something quietly magical about a paw print. It's proof they were real, they were here, they were loved. Our paw print keepsakes capture that shape forever — inkless, clean, and ready to sit on a shelf or slip into a pocket.

2. Ashes Turned Into Jewellery

Some memories deserve to travel with you. A ring, a pendant, a bracelet charm — worn every day, resting close to your heart. Browse our memorial jewellery collection for something that feels like them.

3. Ashes, Captured In Glass

For something a little more unique, Ashes into Glass® transforms a small amount of ashes into a swirling, one-of-a-kind glass keepsake. Beautiful, permanent, and entirely their own.

What Really Happens During A Same-Day Pet Cremation In Boreham, Essex?

A gentle, honest walkthrough of the day you're dreading — so nothing catches you by surprise.

One minute they're curled at your feet. The next, the house is too quiet. If you've found yourself searching for pet cremation near Chelmsford or Boreham, you probably have a hundred questions and no energy to ask them. So let's answer them for you. Gently. Honestly. One step at a time.

Why "Same Day" Actually Matters

Grief doesn't wait politely for a diary slot. Every extra day of not knowing can feel unbearable. That's exactly why we built our service around a same-day, individual cremation — so you're not left wondering, waiting, or wondering some more. Your pet is never mixed with others. Just them. Just you. Just peace.

Step One: We Come To You

Your goodbye can start wherever feels right — your home, your vet, or here with us. We collect seven days a week, with a team that treats your pet like their own. If the time has come to say goodbye at home, our home euthanasia service means your pet's last moments can be the calmest ones, surrounded by everything familiar. We also work closely with local practices through our vet partnership programme, so the handover is seamless.

Step Two: A Farm, A River, A Quiet Place To Wait

Our crematorium sits on a working farm in Boreham, tucked away from traffic and noise. There's a riverside walk nearby, and a little tearoom if you need somewhere warm to sit with your thoughts. Some families wait here quietly. Others prefer to walk, breathe, and come back later. Either way, you're never rushed.

Step Three: Just Your Pet. Truly Alone.

This is the part people ask about most, so we'll be direct: every cremation is individual. Not shared, not scheduled in batches. Whether it's a cat, a dog, a small pet, or a horse, they're cared for as themselves — not one of many. Explore how we tailor the process for cats, dogs, small pets, and horses.

Step Four: Choosing Something To Hold Onto

Ashes are just the beginning of remembering. Before you leave, you can choose from a wide range of caskets and urns, have a name or paw print laser engraved into wood, or pick a piece of memorial jewellery to keep them impossibly close. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is upsold. It's simply there, if and when you want it.

Step Five: Peace Of Mind On The Practical Bits

Money is the last thing anyone wants to think about right now, so we've tried to make it easier. We offer flexible payment plans, and if you have questions about the process itself, our FAQ page answers the ones we hear most — from ashes guarantees to what happens after cremation.

Ready when you are. Call us anytime on 01245 922 023, book online, or simply get in touch — we're here seven days a week, whenever you need us.

Not Just a Cremation: What an Animal Funeral Crematorium Actually Offers

There's a word people often skip over when they're searching for help after losing a pet: funeral. It gets quietly dropped, as though it's a word reserved for people, not the dog who slept at the foot of the bed for twelve years or the cat who insisted on sitting on every document you tried to read. But grief doesn't check whether the one you've lost had two legs or four. And increasingly, people are searching for exactly that word — an animal funeral crematorium — because “cremation” alone doesn't capture what they're actually looking for.

So what's the difference? And how do you tell whether a service is genuinely built around that word, or just using it in a headline?

Cremation Is a Process. A Funeral Is a Goodbye.

A cremation, on its own, is simply what happens to a body. It's a mechanical fact. A funeral is everything around that fact — the space to say goodbye, the choice in how you do it, the acknowledgement that this was a member of your family, not an item being processed. A proper pet funeral crematorium holds both of these at once: the practical means of cremation, and the emotional weight of a farewell, given equal care.

That distinction shows up in small, telling details. Is there an actual room set aside for you to spend time with your pet before anything happens, or is a farewell just a phrase on a website? Are you given a genuine choice in how involved you want to be, or is the decision made for you the moment you arrive? These are the questions worth asking, whichever crematorium you're considering.

Why the Word “Funeral” Matters for Dogs Specifically

A dog funeral crematorium tends to attend to a particular kind of grief — the loss of a companion who was present for the ordinary rhythm of daily life. The walks, the door-greeting, the specific weight of them leaning against your leg. Owners often want something that reflects that: a proper wooden casket rather than a generic container, a paw print taken as a lasting keepsake, the option to be present as their dog is carefully placed for cremation rather than simply told it's been “taken care of.” None of that is excessive. It's simply treating the relationship as real, because it was.

Why It Matters for Cats Too

Cats are sometimes underestimated in this conversation, as though their independence somehow means their loss is felt less. Anyone who has lost a cat knows that isn't true. A proper cat funeral crematorium offers exactly the same dignity and choice as it would for a dog — individual cremation, a private farewell, keepsakes sized and suited to a smaller companion. Grief doesn't scale down with size.

What to Actually Look For

Individual cremation as standard, not communal cremation dressed up in gentler language

Accreditation from a recognised body, such as the Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria (APPCC), which involves independent inspection of standards and practice

A genuine farewell room, not just a waiting area, with time given at your pace rather than a schedule's

Clear choice over your level of involvement — present throughout, present in part, or not present at all

Honesty about timings and process, rather than vague reassurances

An Animal Funeral Crematorium, Not Just an Address

Ultimately, the phrase people are reaching for when they search for an animal funeral crematorium isn't really about the building. It's about being met with the same seriousness they'd expect for any loss that matters. A place that treats a goodbye as a goodbye — whoever it's for, however many legs they had — and gives you the time, the choice, and the dignity to say it properly.

Grief for a pet is real grief, and there's no correct way to move through it. If you'd find it helpful to talk to someone beyond the practical arrangements, pet bereavement support is available and worth reaching out to.

If you're weighing up your options, even just for peace of mind before the time comes, we're happy to talk you through exactly what our farewell process involves — no pressure, and no obligation to decide anything today.

What Really Happens on the Day: A Gentle Guide to Same-Day Pet Cremation

A particular kind of quiet settles over a house after a pet has gone. The lead still hangs by the door. The food bowl is still half full. And somewhere in the middle of all that quiet, you're expected to make decisions — practical, unfamiliar ones — at the exact moment you have the least capacity for them.

So let's take one thing off your plate. Here's exactly what a same-day cremation actually involves, step by step, so that when the day comes, at least this part isn't a mystery.

It Starts However You Need It To

There's no single “right” way to begin. Some people bring their pet directly to the crematorium themselves, finding it helps to be part of every step. Others would rather a car came to collect their pet from home, or from the vet's, so they don't have to face that particular journey. Either way is completely normal, and collection can usually be arranged the same day, seven days a week, because grief doesn't keep office hours and neither, as much as possible, do the people trying to help you through it.

The Farewell Room — As Much or As Little as You Want

Before anything happens, there's space and time set aside in a private farewell room. This is entirely at your pace. Some owners want a last few quiet minutes alone. Others would rather not linger. Both are completely understood, and nobody will rush you through a door before you're ready to walk through it.

If you choose to be present for the cremation itself, you're given a genuine choice in how involved you want to be — whether that's watching as your pet is gently placed into the chamber, being nearby without seeing that particular moment, or stepping away entirely and letting the team take care of everything from there. There isn't a version of this that's more “correct” than another. Whatever lets you say goodbye in a way that feels like yours is the right choice.

While You Wait

A same-day individual cremation typically takes around two to three hours. If you've travelled some distance, you're not simply left to sit in a car park watching the clock — there's usually a suggestion or two nearby, a riverside walk, a village tearoom, somewhere gentler to pass the time than a waiting room. It's a strange kind of afternoon, waiting to bring your pet home in a different form than the one you're used to, and having somewhere quiet to be during it can matter more than people expect.

Coming Home Again

Once the cremation is complete and the ashes have been carefully prepared, you have a few options for how they reach you: collecting them yourself from a private room at the crematorium, having them delivered to your home, or picking them up from your local vet if that feels easier. Whichever way, the aim is the same — to get your pet back to you gently, without unnecessary delay, and with the same care they were treated with from the very first phone call.

You Don't Have to Know What You Want Yet

If you're reading this before that day has come, you may not have any idea yet whether you'd want to be present, what kind of urn feels right, or whether you'd rather your pet came home the same day at all. That's completely alright. None of these decisions need to be made in advance, and a good team will talk you through every option gently, without ever making you feel like you're choosing wrong.

Losing a pet is a real and significant loss, and it's alright to grieve it as one. If you're finding it hard to cope, know that support is available — from pet bereavement helplines to simply talking it through with someone who understands.

If you'd like to talk through your options, even just to understand them for the future, our team is here seven days a week — gently, and without any pressure to decide anything today.
