How Much Does Pet Cremation Cost? What Affects the Price and How to Get a Clear Quote

|
Quick answer The cost of a pet cremation depends mainly on the type of cremation (communal, partitioned or individual), your pet’s size, how your pet reaches the crematorium, and any extras such as a casket, urn or keepsake. There is rarely one fixed price, so the most reliable approach is to ask for a quote that lists exactly what is included. At Phoenix Pet Cremations we carry out genuine individual cremations only, we give you a quotation based on your requirements, and payment plans are available. |
Nobody wants to compare prices at the moment they lose a pet. But it is a very practical worry, and one of the first things many people quietly wonder about. Cost often feels hard to pin down, because two quotes that look similar can describe very different services.
This guide explains what actually affects the price of a pet cremation, how to compare quotes fairly, and what help is available if you would like to spread the cost. If you are reading this in the first hours after losing your pet, you may also find our gentle guide to the first 24 hours helpful. There is no pressure to decide anything today.
What are the different types of pet cremation?
The single biggest reason prices differ between providers is the type of cremation. The terms are used slightly differently by different businesses, so it is always worth asking how a provider defines them.
|
Type |
What it usually means |
What you receive |
|
Communal |
Several pets are cremated together in one chamber. |
Ashes are not returned to you. |
|
Partitioned |
More than one pet is cremated at the same time, kept apart by dividers. |
Ashes are returned, though they may not be entirely separate from other pets. |
|
Individual |
Your pet is cremated entirely on their own. |
Only your own pet’s ashes are returned. |
Phoenix Pet Cremations carries out genuine individual cremations only. Each pet is cremated alone, so you receive your own pet’s ashes, together with a certificate. You can read more on our pet cremation page and in our FAQs.
What else affects the cost of a pet cremation?
- Your pet’s size. Larger pets need more time and resources, so the price usually rises with size. Small pets, cats, dogs and horses are quoted differently. See our pages on cat cremation, dog cremation, small pet cremation and horse cremation.
- How your pet reaches us. We can collect from your home or your vet, or you can bring your pet to us. Collection involves travel, so it is reflected in the quote.
- When it takes place. Same-day cremation takes place between 8.30am and 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Out-of-hours charges apply outside normal working hours, so tell us about timing when you call.
- Whether you would like to be present. An attended cremation is optional and is charged in addition to the cremation cost. It has limited availability and must be arranged in advance.
- How you would like to receive the ashes. You are welcome to collect them from us. We can also return them to your home or your vet, and an additional charge applies for that.
- Caskets, urns and keepsakes. A simple choice costs less than an engraved casket, a photo frame, or a clay paw print. Take a look at our ashes options, paw prints and personalised engraving.
- Euthanasia, if you need it. If your pet is being put to sleep, the vet’s fee is separate from the cremation. We have a team of partnered vets who can help, including home euthanasia.
What should a clear quote include?
When you ask any crematorium for a price, these questions help you compare like for like:
- Is it an individual, partitioned or communal cremation?
- Will I receive my own pet’s ashes, and will there be a certificate?
- Does the price include collection, or is that charged separately?
- Are there out-of-hours or weekend charges?
- What container are the ashes returned in, and is it included?
- Is there an extra charge to return the ashes to me or my vet?
- Are there any other charges I should know about before I agree?
A trustworthy provider will answer these plainly and give you the answers in writing if you ask.
Why do prices differ so much between providers?
Most of the difference comes down to what is being offered. A low price may describe a communal or partitioned cremation, while a higher price may describe a single, private, individual cremation with a certificate and a choice of how involved you want to be. Neither is wrong, but they are different services, so compare the details rather than the headline number.
It also helps to check whether the crematorium is accredited. We are an accredited member of the Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria (APPCC), which involves independent inspection under a strict code of practice. See our APPCC accreditation page for more.
Can you spread the cost of a pet cremation?
Yes. We understand that losing a pet can be emotionally and financially difficult, so we offer two payment plan options at checkout: Klarna and PayPal Credit. PayPal Credit lets you repay over 6, 12 or 24 months, and Klarna offers shorter options. Both are subject to status and credit approval, are for UK residents aged 18 and over, and late payments or borrowing more than you can afford may affect your credit. Full details are on our payment plans page.
What if your vet has already suggested a crematorium?
Many vets work with a particular provider, and sadly not all offer a choice. You can ask your vet whether you may choose a different crematorium. If your vet recommends another one, check that it is an APPCC member, because not all pet crematoria follow a code of conduct that guarantees a genuine individual cremation. We work with vets across the area, and you can read about our vets partnership.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a pet cremation cost?
There is no single price. The cost depends on the type of cremation, your pet’s size, how your pet reaches the crematorium, the timing and any extras. At Phoenix Pet Cremations we give you a quotation based on your requirements, so call 01245 922 023 for a clear figure.
Is an individual cremation more expensive than a communal one?
Usually, yes, because the chamber is used for your pet alone and your pet’s ashes are returned to you. The two are different services, so compare what each includes.
Does same-day cremation cost extra?
Our same-day service is available Monday to Friday, between 8.30am and 5.30pm, at no extra cost. Out-of-hours charges apply outside normal working hours.
Can I pay for a pet cremation in instalments?
Yes. You can choose Klarna or PayPal Credit at checkout, subject to status and credit approval. See our payment plans page for details.
Is cremation for a horse priced differently?
Yes. Horses are quoted separately because of the size and arrangements involved. Our equine cremation page and our guide to equine cremation in Essex explain how it works.
What if I am not sure which option to choose?
Just call us. We will explain the options plainly, with no pressure to decide, and you can take the time you need.
